SVG Sweeps Sonoma Weekend with O'Reilly and Cup Series Victories
SONOMA, Calif. — If there was any doubt about who NASCAR's road course specialist is, Shane van Gisbergen erased it once again with a dominant weekend at Sonoma Raceway.
Van Gisbergen completed an impressive weekend sweep by winning both Saturday's NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 and Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350, further cementing his reputation as one of the premier road racers in the sport.
Saturday: Total Control in the O'Reilly Series
Driving the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, van Gisbergen controlled much of Saturday's race, leading 66 of the 79 laps. While Connor Zilisch mounted an impressive comeback from the rear of the field to finish second, he was never able to challenge SVG on the final run.
The victory marked van Gisbergen's sixth career O'Reilly Auto Parts Series win, with every one of those victories coming on either a road course or street course—a testament to his exceptional background in international road racing.
Sunday: Holding Off the Challenge
Sunday's Cup Series race proved to be a greater challenge.
After starting sixth, van Gisbergen and the No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet steadily worked toward the front. Crew strategy played a key role, with the team utilizing pit strategy to gain track position before SVG took control of the race in the closing stages.
Chase Briscoe closed rapidly over the final laps and nearly had an opportunity entering the final hairpin, but van Gisbergen held on to claim the victory by just 0.357 seconds. The win marked his second Cup victory of the season, his second consecutive Sonoma triumph, and the eighth Cup Series victory of his career.
Road Course Excellence
Since arriving in NASCAR, Shane van Gisbergen has quickly become the benchmark on road courses.
His ability to maximize braking zones, conserve his equipment over long runs, and execute flawless restarts has made him one of the toughest competitors to beat whenever the series turns left and right. Sonoma was simply the latest example of that dominance.
Completing a sweep of both the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and Cup Series races in the same weekend is no small feat. It highlights not only van Gisbergen's talent behind the wheel but also the strength of the JR Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing organizations.
With the playoffs approaching, SVG has once again reminded the NASCAR garage that whenever the schedule features a road course, he remains the driver everyone must beat.
