Layne Riggs last turn pass leads to a win at San Diego!
After repairs from damage during practice and battling trouble during pit stops, Layne Riggs, driver of the #34 Ford F-150 for Front Row Motorsports, held on and made a final turn pass to win after Tyler Reif cut the corner.
A race that was full of excitement showed Riggs as a favorite early on. A battle at the beginning of the race led to first stage win, and as the race progressed Riggs would find himself near the front and leading laps throughout.
A late race pit stop would set him back, and would cause him to fight to the front again. His teammate, Chandler Smith, driver of the #38 Ford F-150 for Front Row Motorsports, would pass him during Lap 44 with fresher tires, which then led to a red flag when Tyler Ankrum hit the wall near the pits and dislodged it.
Teammates Smith and Riggs would start 1 and 2, and as the restart happened on lap 49, Ben Rhodes would hit a tire barrier and cause a pile-up that would bring out the caution. One big question: Did Layne Riggs have enough fuel to make it?
As the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series overtime would start, Chandler Smith would lead and Kaden Honeycutt would spin Chandler Smith and hit the wall. Honeycutt fell behind as Layne Riggs and Daniel Hemric battled for the lead. Hemric would start to fade, and Tyler Reif would move his way up to the front. Riggs would tell his spotters his truck was sputtering, but he wasn’t out yet.
Just as they neared the finish line on the final lap, Tyler Reif would miss the chicane and cut the course on the final turns, which gave Layne Riggs the go-ahead to pass as Reif stops for the penalty.
Layne Riggs would pass the finish line and win at San Diego by 1.332 seconds over Daniel Hemric.
